There Are No Weeds

The plants we’ve all been brainwashed to pull, poison, and despise were actually the Earth’s first responders. The soil’s very own herbal remedies at work, supporting, balancing, and healing our sacred soils. The medicine we forgot how to use.

It’s beyond time we reclaim and repurpose our language together, one family at a time and stop calling our wild medicines ‘weeds.’

Words carry power.
And the word ‘weed’ has too long been used to confuse, erase, diminish, and disconnect us from our plant allies.

In permaculture, we see ‘weeds’ differently. We don’t call them invaders or pests. We call them soil indicators, helpers, and guides, vital parts of our local ecosystems.

True pioneer plants: that is their gift, their purpose, their wisdom.

🌼 Dandelions are aerating compacted ground with deep taproots.
🌿 Comfrey is mining minerals from deep below to heal the topsoil.
🌸 Yarrow is dynamic accumulator and soil structure support.

These wild plants appear intentionally, not to disrupt, but to repair. Their presence tells a story we’ve forgotten: one of pH imbalance, of nutrient need, of soil compaction, healing in motion.

Somewhere along the way, from our great grandparents till now, we were taught to fear the land, we forgot our plant wisdom, instead guided to spray it, shame it and to see our backyard medicine as a mess to be cleaned up, pulled out, and thrown away.

The word ‘weed’ was never neutral. It came with a dark intention, a mindset of control, power, and disconnect. One of ignorance over innerstanding and forgetting that nature knows how to heal herself.

So let’s remember NOW.

There are no weeds.
Only misunderstood plants we are now re-learning to listen to, learn from, and to heal the soil with together.

Let’s keep reclaiming our connection to the land, to our plant, fungi, and animal kingdoms, one wild herb, one plant partner at a time.

Change starts at home.
No more ‘weeds’ is a needed evolution. 🌱

Natural Farming – Magic on the New Land

“You’re far too late,” they said.
“Nothing will grow,” they said.
“A waste of money,” they said.

And still, in May, we felt the urge to sow green manure seeds.
It was late — very late — but it felt right.

Then came the unexpected rains.

“In 1960, David Latimer planted a tiny garden inside of a large glass bottle and sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self-contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.

For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eat the dead plants and break down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.

Aug is here already! This summer season has flown by in the north. So much is busting in our gardens to enjoy and harvest, seed collecting is beginning, what a gift and exchange of energy now right!?!

This is transition time. The cool season crops should be started and if not its not to late for many zones to keep the harvest flow going.

Plant Health Starts At The ROOT!

Roots are a plants stability and connection to life. Their roots carry water and essential minerals to the rest of the plant. Strong root systems are absolutely vital to a plant’s health, if the roots are unwell so is the plant, but if the roots are healthy as seen here, the seedling is starting off with great base for success.

The importance of healthy roots can not be stressed enough. Roots are how plants eat and drink and produce great harvests. As the plants grow their roots works as a storage unit to protect plants from times of drought storing excess water for later use. (Amazing right!)
