Found this guy hiding from the chickens

It was rainy again today so I got the 7th battery pack switched over to the new server rack jk BMS. Brings me up to 2028 amp hours or 109.5kwh. The other 6 charged a bit today while I was working on the 7th so when I connected it it drew 70 amps from its peers. I had programmed it that if it took more than 40 amps to limit charging current to 10amps. That works like a treat. It’s now under 10amps and it will rise and fall with the others tonight and tomorrow. Perfect!

I'm in the middle of a really bad crime area. The local news stations try to fool us by not saying who the suspects are. So what they do is run the main story about a shooting. Then a few days later they leak a few more details. And a few more... and after about 4 iterations they finally tell you a black guy was arrested for "a shooting". Problem is there were 2 more shootings since the original story and no one knows which shooter in tied to which shooting.

The irony is that by dragging the stories out like this to conceal the race of the shooters, they actually make it appear there is even more crime.

I don't post much here but when I do I feel that it's pretty important I think we need to accept the fact that we communication lines that we currently have are most likely going to be threatened and we need to establish a new means of communication to keep our group as it is. For the individuals who are strong in communication such as Lora JMS and several others that have been brought to my attention I would like you to chime in and give us the best suggestion on a network that we would have the ability to communicate a bare minimum Nationwide if not worldwide. Voltages in a solar system. All of these voltages are parts of independant portions of the system.

Panel voltages... Panels come in 18v to 50v varieties. a 100w panel might make 18v @ 5amps. A 650w panel might make 50v @ 13 amps. These are connected in series to a higher voltage and go to your inverter or MPPT charger. The combined panel voltage might be in the range of 250Vdc to 600Vdc.

Battery Voltages. There are 12v systems, 24v systems, 48v systems and 384v systems. 384v systems are dangerous for hobbyists, so are not common at all. Note that 12,24,48v is the NOMINAL voltage. A 12v system typically operates at 13.8v. A 48v system operates at 55.2v or higher.

Inverter voltages... Your inverter will accept battery voltage and/or solar voltage and produce the AC power you want to use in your house. That voltage is typically 230v in EU, 120/240 in the US. The inverters can also be ganged together to make 3 phase 208v US or 380v 3 phase in EU. If you see an inverter that says 230v you should assume it is for the EU market. If you see 240v assume it is for the US market.

The post above this shows 9 batteries with blue communication cables between them. The cables are what's known as ethernet cables but they do not use TCP/IP.

How BMS comms work...
The connections on the right are RS485 which is a bidirectional old school serial connection. Each inverter is given a unique address from 0-15 or 0-31. It will periodically broadcast it's SOC and some other data.

The BMS that is given address 0 becomes the master. it aggregates data from the other BMSs. It then sends summary data out over the CAN port to your inverter. it could be that you have an older inverter that doesn't use CAN so that same data can be sent over the extra 485 port on the left. Look carefully and you'll see the bottom battery has an additional black "ethernet" cable plugged in. That's the CANBUS comms to the inverter.

CAN bus is a rigidly defined protocol that sends numbered packets.. 0x355 (853 decimal) will contain State of Charge for example.

Fire drill time:
Tonight while your wife and kids are watching TV, go outside to the highway. Approach your house as if you were going to rob it. Look at your house from an outsider's perspective. Could you look in the windows without anyone noticing? Could you have kicked in the back door? Think about how attractive a house with lights on would be after SHTF. Think about how far the smell of bbq can carry.

So how defensible is your house? How attractive is your house (in the wrong way).

Something to think about.

A word about generators and solar. If your system is grid tied or you otherwise use AC coupled inverters, make sure your generator idles at 3720rpm 62hz (3120rpm 52hz in Europe).

The reason for this is that when grid tied inverters see 60hz (50hz) they will synchronize with it and make all the power they can. They will happily backfeed your generator and harm it.

If the generator is idling at 62hz (52hz eu) the solar inverters will see this as either "out of spec" or "make 0 power" and not back feed your generator.

Older grid tie inverters will not sync when the frequency is >60.5hz. Newer grid tie inverters will make full power up until 61hz and throttle back power as the frequency rises to 62hz.

Attached is a screen shot of my battery inverter throttling the grid tie inverters.

A local guy came by yesterday to consult about his solar setup. He revealed to me that he’d been connecting the pv wires inside a jbox and had stabbed himself in the finger with 360vdc.

The solution for this is to disconnect any two panels in the string, do the work and then reconnect them.

Florida is one state where you are required to be connected to power. That means a monthly minimum bill. They also want to charge solar grid tied system people an additional $25 a month extra “to cover the cost of providing service to low usage customers.” Wait wasn’t that what the min bill is for???

Folks as power companies are changing these grid tied rules you are better off to simply install a system with batteries that doesn’t sell power. Just use the grid to charge batteries if you need a little energy.

I have a grundfoss base model SQ pump for my house. I got it because of the softstart. I had no idea the motor's rotor was inside a stainless sleeve so there is no pump shaft seal to ever wear out.

THe SQ Flex pump is designed to run on solar power directly and will automatically change speeds as more or less solar power is available.
