🎧 Trump says U.S. will provide security to Ukraine during talks with Zelenskyy

💬 Over in the U.S., President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House, and said Washington will be involved in providing security for Ukraine.
The comment came as European leaders traveled to Washington in support of Ukraine,.. and in hopes of a peace deal.
Lee Seung-jae has more.

During a summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the U.S. would be involved in ensuring Ukraine's future security.

"There'll be a lot of there'll be a lot of help when it comes to security. There's going to be a lot of help. It's going to be good. They are first line of defense because they're there, they're Europe, But we're going to help them out also. We'll be involved."

The Trump administration has so far avoided deep involvement in the Ukraine war, focusing instead on supplying arms indirectly through NATO.
However, Trump’s latest remarks, which did not rule out the possibility of U.S. troop deployments, suggest a shift in Washington’s security strategy.
Trump also reiterated his intention to push for a peace agreement immediately, rather than first seeking a temporary ceasefire.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy stressed that Russia must stop the war, calling for a trilateral meeting between himself, Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"And we are ready for trilateral as president said, this is good signal about trilateral, I think this is very good."
Zelenskyy added that all the "sensitive issues" including territorial issues would be discussed at the highest level in a trilateral summit.

In response, President Trump said that he expected a trilateral summit with President Putin and Zelenskyy to take place, calling it a matter of "when, not if."
Trump also suggested that such a summit could bring an end to Russia's three-year invasion of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, European and NATO leaders also took part in a meeting with President Trump at the White House on Monday.
There, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the much needed security for Ukraine would be possible after Monday's meeting.

"A historic step actually could come out of this meeting in terms of security for Ukraine and security in Europe."
Unlike the more tense February meeting, Monday's summit between Trump and Zelenskyy unfolded in a friendlier atmosphere.

U.S. President Donald Trump held an online summit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and key European leaders, ahead of his upcoming face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Hosted from Berlin on Wednesday, the online meeting brought together President Zelenskyy, European leaders, including German Chancellor Merz, French President Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and NATO's Secretary-General Mark Rutte, alongside President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
The attendees shared thoughts that any peace must include Ukraine's voice, reject territorial concessions, and proceed with firm security guarantees.
Zelenskyy warned that Putin's pledge to pause aggression was a bluff, aimed at stronger leverage on the battlefield.
President Trump later described the call as a "very good conversation" and warned that Russia would face "very severe consequences" if Putin didn't agree to end the war after their summit on Friday.

🎧 Trump says he will impose 'substantially' higher tariffs on India over its purchase of Russian oil

💬U.S. President Donald Trump has said he will raise tariffs on goods from India over its Russian oil purchases accusing the country of funding the Ukraine war.
But, India called the claim unreasonable.
Park Jun-han has more.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to "substantially raise" tariffs on India beyond the original 25 percent rate set for August 7th, citing India’s purchase and resale of Russian oil.
In a Truth Social post, Trump criticized India for profiting from buying Russian energy while ignoring the Ukrainians killed in the war with Russia.
In response to Trump's post, India called the claim unreasonable and unjustifiable, noting that the U.S. and European Union are also buying energy from Russia, and said it will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.
India has been Russia's biggest customer for Russian crude since 2023 and imported 50 percent more than China did last year.
South Africa is also trying to close a deal with the U.S., with the country facing a 30 percent tariff.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said Monday that "South Africa is committed to a principled approach, and the country will continue to use all available diplomatic channels to negotiate a mutually beneficial trade deal with the United States."
He also emphasized protecting jobs and industries that are vulnerable to tariffs.
Brazil, accounting for 39 percent of total U.S. coffee imports, is navigating its 50 percent tariff by exploring alternative markets.
China has opened its doors to Brazilian coffee and sesame, a move seen as a strategic counter to U.S. pressure.
Brazil is also considering filing a complaint to the World Trade Organization over the U.S. tariffs.

🎧 First direct passenger flight between Moscow and Pyongyang takes off

💬The first direct passenger flight between Moscow and Pyongyang in around three decades has taken off.
On Sunday at 7:25 PM Moscow time, a Pyongyang-bound flight operated by Russian Nordwind Airlines departed from Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport.
The flight carries about 400 passengers and takes around eight hours.
Tickets cost about 45-thousand rubles, roughly 560 U.S. dollars.
Until now, the only direct flight between Russia and North Korea was the Vladivostok-Pyongyang route.
Since last year’s comprehensive strategic partnership treaty, Russia and the North have expanded transport cooperation.
Russia is also considering a new direct route to Wonsan on NorthKorea 's east coast.

🎧France to formally recognise Palestinian state, Macron says

💬Let's begin with France's move to recognize Palestine as a state.

Sure. French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will recognize Palestine as a state.
President Macron stated in a social media post on Thursday that France will formalize its recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September, in support of "sustainable peace in the Middle East."
Macron emphasized that ending the Gaza war, securing the release of hostages, demilitarizing Hamas, and delivering massive humanitarian aid are urgent priorities that his decision supports.
The move makes France, home to the largest Jewish and Muslim populations in Western Europe, the first G7 country to recognize Palestinian statehood.
While the Palestinian Authority welcomed the announcement, calling it proof of France's support for international law and Palestinian self-determination, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced it as "rewarding terror."
The State of Palestine is currently recognized by more than 140 of the 193 UN member countries.
