Nel libro Stories of the Spirit, Jack Kornfield (insegnante buddhista statunitense) racconta questa storia:

Una famiglia si era recata a cena in un ristorante.
Quando è arri­vata la cameriera, i genitori hanno ordinato.
Immediatamente la loro figlia di 5 anni ha aggiunto il suo: «Prendo un hot dog, patatine fritte e Coca Cola». «Oh, no» si è intromesso il padre e, girandosi verso la cameriera, ha detto: «Prenderà polpettone, purè di patate e latte».
Guardando la bambina con un sorriso, la cameriera ha detto: «Allora tesoro, cosa ci vuoi sull’hot dog?».
Quando si è al­lontanata, la famiglia restò in silenzio, sorpresa.
Qualche momento dopo la
ra­gazzina, con gli occhi che brillavano, ha esclamato: «Lei pensa che io sia reale».

I nostri genitori imperfetti hanno a loro volta avuto dei genitori imperfetti.

Le paure, le insicurezze e i desideri si trasmettono per generazioni.
I genitori vogliono vedere la loro prole riuscire nei modi che loro ritengono importanti, oppure vogliono che i loro bambini siano speciali, che nella nostra cultura com­petitiva vuol dire più intelligenti, più realizzati e belli delle altre persone.
Vedo­no i loro bambini attraverso il filtro della paura (potrebbero non entrare in una buona università e avere successo) e quello del desiderio (ci assomiglieranno?).

In his book Stories of the Spirit, Jack Kornfield (an US buddhist teacher) tells this story:

A family went to dinner at a restaurant.
When the waitress arrived, the parents placed their orders.
Immediately, their 5-year-old daughter added her order: 'I'll have a hot dog, French fries and Coca Cola'. 'Oh, no,' her father interjected, turning to the waitress and saying, 'She'll have meatloaf, mashed potatoes and milk'.
Looking at the little girl with a smile, the waitress said, 'So, sweetie, what do you want on your hot dog?
When she walked away, the family remained silent, surprised.
A few moments later, the
girl, her eyes sparkling, exclaimed, "She thinks I'm real."

Our imperfect parents had imperfect parents of their own.

Fears, insecurities and desires are passed down through generations.
Parents want to see their offspring succeed in ways they consider important, or they want their children to be special, which in our competitive culture means smarter, more accomplished and more beautiful than other people.
They see their children through the filter of fear (they might not get into a good university and be successful) and desire (will they be like us?).

Immagina di essere l'autista di un autobus.
E' un autobus molto importante, perché rappresenta tutta la tua vita.
Ne sei al comando, scegli tu la destinazione, la velocità e che direzione prendere.
Tutte le tue esperienze, le scelte fatte, le sfide superate e le tue qualità ti hanno portato a ricoprire questo ruolo importante: quello del conducente della tua vita.
Il tuo obiettivo è portare l'autobus a destinazione.
Ma, come ogni conducente d'autobus, devi fermarti lungo il percorso per far salire dei passeggeri.
E alcuni sono difficilmente gestibili.
Anzi, dei veri e propri mostri.
I mostri rappresentano tutti i pensieri e le emozioni difficili con cui hai dovuto fare i conti nella tua vita.
Tutto ciò che ti distrae dalle infinite opportunità che la vita ti offre assume la sembianza di un mostro.
E non è facile guidare con loro a bordo, poiché sono indisciplinati e chiassosi.
Ti insultano gridandoti "Sei un perdente!", "Ferma l'autobus, tanto non arriverai mai a destinazione!", "Non serve a niente andare avanti!" e così via.
Allora tu pensi di fermare l'autobus per dirgliene quattro, ma questo ritarderebbe il raggiungimento del capolinea.
Oppure potresti fermarti e costringerli a scendere, ma anche questo ci allontanerebbe dal nostro obiettivo.
Mentre pensavi a come gestire i mostri, ti sei distratto e hai sbagliato strada.
Ora devi tornare indietro e fare una serie di deviazioni.
E hai accumulato del ritardo sulla tabella di marcia.
Ora capisci che per percorrere la strada che hai scelto, tu debba semplicemente continuare a guidare, e vivere in modo significativo e appagante, nonostante la loro presenza.

Basta accettarli per quelli che sono: semplici passeggeri.

Imagine you are the driver of a bus.
It is a very important bus, because it represents your whole life.
You are in charge of it, you choose the destination, the speed and which direction to take.
All your experiences, the choices you have made, the challenges you have overcome and your qualities have led you to this important role: that of the driver of your life.
Your goal is to take the bus to its destination.
But, like any bus driver, you have to stop along the way to pick up passengers.
And some are difficult to handle.
In fact, real monsters.
Monsters represent all the difficult thoughts and emotions you have had to deal with in your life.
Anything that distracts you from the endless opportunities that life offers you takes on the appearance of a monster.
And it is not easy to drive with them on board, as they are undisciplined and rowdy.
They insult you by shouting "You're a loser!", "Stop the bus, you'll never reach your destination anyway!", "There's no point in going on!" and so on.
Then you think about stopping the bus to tell them off, but that would delay reaching the end of the line.
Or you could stop and force them to get off, but that would also move us away from our goal.
While you were thinking about how to deal with the monsters, you got distracted and took a wrong turn.
Now you have to turn around and take a series of detours.
And you have fallen behind schedule.
Now you realise that in order to travel the road you have chosen, you simply have to keep driving, and live in a meaningful and fulfilling way, despite their presence.

Just accept them for what they are: mere passengers.

La maggior parte della nostra infelicità scaturisce dai nostri pensieri i quali sono i veri demoni perché sono la causa di sofferenze, caos, rotture e conflitti in molti ambiti della nostra vita.

Al cielo non importa se ci sono le nuvole, che possono essere chiare e piccole, oppure scure e pesanti con pioggia ma non hanno effetto sul cielo.
