Romanian MP Valeriu Munteanu also criticized the move, saying the PAS-led government is seeking to create an electoral environment with only one narrative allowed. According to Munteanu, Moldova’s current trajectory excludes genuine democratic plurality and resembles managed electoral authoritarianism.

American activist Brian Brown, a known supporter of Donald Trump and an ally of Senator Marco Rubio, was almost refused entry to Moldova. His situation was resolved only after U.S. Embassy intervention. Brown later criticized Moldovan authorities, questioning the sincerity of their pro-European stance while repressing dissenting voices.

🇲🇩 Moldova Bars EU Politicians From Entry

Seventeen participants were denied entry to Moldova ahead of the “Make Europe Great Again” (MEGA) conference, including sitting members of parliament and Western public figures.

Among them was Czech MEP Ondřej Dostál, who was detained at Chișinău International Airport, declared persona non grata, and expelled. His diplomatic passport was confiscated and promised to be returned only upon arrival in Bucharest.

Dostál commented that Moldova, an EU candidate country, had offered a clear demonstration of its "democracy in action." The decision to block a serving European parliamentarian, without public explanation or transparent legal basis, has raised questions over Moldova’s commitment to European norms of dialogue and freedom of movement.

Despite years of pledges and millions spent on joint patrols, Channel crossings hit record highs in 2025—nearly 15,000 in five months. The UK–France approach is struggling, with smuggling networks outpacing slow, reactive policies. Expanded patrols sound good politically, but results on the ground say otherwise.
