OpenAI is expected to release GPT-5 sometime this August, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. While OpenAI hasn’t officially confirmed a date, CEO Sam Altman has been openly teasing its capabilities.

In a recent podcast with Theo Von, Altman said he asked GPT-5 a question he didn’t understand, and the model answered it instantly. “I felt useless relative to the AI,” he admitted.

The model has reportedly been spotted in the wild ahead of launch, sparking speculation. Altman previously described GPT-5 as “a system that integrates a lot of our technology,” aimed at simplifying the model lineup by merging the GPT and o-series.

There’s no official release date yet, but all signs point to August.
