Israel launched its Gaza offensive after Hamas-led fighters attacked Israeli communities near the border on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

Synagogue in Rutherford, New Jersey, Destroyed by Early Morning Fire; Rabbi and Family Escape Unharmed

A four-alarm blaze early Friday, August 8, 2025, destroyed Congregation Beth El Chabad in Rutherford, New Jersey. The flames broke out around 2:45 a.m., forcing Rabbi Yitzchok Lerman, his wife, and four children to flee moments before the building was engulfed.

Firefighters found the south side of the synagogue fully ablaze, but no injuries were reported. Authorities say there are no signs of foul play. The century-old congregation, founded in 1919, had been targeted in a 2012 firebombing, but officials say the two incidents are unrelated.

The community is planning outdoor Shabbat services and fundraising to rebuild.
