UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves (India)

13 of the 18 Biosphere Reserves of India are a part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, based on the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme list.

UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves

Himachal Pradesh’s Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve Joins UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

The announcement was made at the World Congress of Biosphere Reserves in Hangzhou, China.

The Cold Desert has now become India’s 13th site in the global network. It includes protected areas like Pin Valley National Park and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, and is home to around 12,000 people.

India's Ramsar Tally Hits 93

India has designated two New Ramsar Sites in Bihar.

• Gokul Jalashay in Buxar
• Udaipur Jheel in West Champaran.

The Ramsar Convention was signed in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran. It Came into force from 21st December, 1975. India signed it on 1st February 1982.

UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites

Seven new Natural Heritage Sites from across the country have been included in UNESCO’s Tentative List of World Heritage Sites, increasing India’s count on the Tentative List from 62 to 69 properties.

The Ministry of Culture informed that with this inclusion, India now has 49 cultural, 17 natural, and 3 mixed heritage properties.

The newly added sites include :-

▪️Deccan Traps at Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra
▪️Karnataka’s Geological Heritage of St. Mary’s Island Cluster
▪️Meghalayan Age Caves
▪️Naga Hill Ophiolite
▪️Andhra Pradesh’s Erra Matti Dibbalu
▪️Tirumala hills
▪️Kerala’s Varkala Cliffs
