The Dutch Sinterklaasfeest has pre-Christian roots, blending the historical figure of Saint Nicholas with older Germanic winter traditions. The celebration is characterized by its vibrant customs: the arrival of Sinterklaas from Spain.

Festive parades, the giving of speculaas cookies and pepernoten, and the playful, anonymous poetry exchanged with gifts during Pakjesavond. Its most colorful element is the elaborate gift-wrapping and the role of the bishop's helpers, Zwarte Piet.
