The FDA sent over 50 warning letters to GLP-1 compounders and manufacturers warning them about saying their products are “generic” versions of the FDA-approved drugs with the “same active ingredient”. The FDA says these statements about equivalent safety and efficacy are false and misleading and in violation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The FDA started sending letters September 9 but is still sending letters to both US and international companies that manufacture the manufacture glucagon-like peptides (GLP-1) semaglutide and tirzepatide “Ozempic and Wegovy-like drugs.” In particular, the FDA warns them in particular about making claims that their product facilitates weight loss.

The companies have been given 15 days to reassess their labeling, promotional statements, and social media content and remedy their misleading claims. Each company must either justify their claims or develop a corrective action plan. Failure to do so likely means the FDA will use their enforcement authority which includes product seizure.

The FDA issued the warnings in light of the skyrocketing demand for GLP-1 therapies to treat obesity and Type 2 diabetes and the plethora of companies stepping in to meet that demand and make lots of money in the process.
