💬 As the U.S. government shutdown stretched on for a second day on Thursday,with no signs of an imminent resolution, the White House has warned that layoffs of federal workers are "likely going to be in the thousands."

The Trump Administration has warned that thousands could lose their jobs, with Democrat-run government programs cut, if the Democrats don't agree to end the federal shutdown.
On Thursday, President Donald Trump indicated that temporary job losses could become permanent as the partisan stand-off in the Senate continues, as Republicans push for a temporary funding bill, which the Democrats have rejected.The Democrats are demanding an extra one trillion dollars to extend health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, which helps low-and-middle-income households afford insurance and prevents millions from losing healthcare coverage.
With the government shutdown that began on midnight Wednesday, half a million federal employees are expected to be furloughed.
And Trump has hinted those job losses could become permanent.
“Well, there could be firings, and that's their fault. And it could also be other things. I mean, we could cut projects that they wanted, favorite projects, and they'd be permanently cut.”
On Thursday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that job losses are “likely going to be in the thousands,” among agencies that "don't align with the Presidents' values."
The White House has already announced it would withhold 26 billion dollars in funding for Democratic-led states, including 18 billion in infrastructure funding for New York, and 8 billion for environmental projects across 16 states.
“And today, as a result of this, they've unleashed chaos through millions of families across our great country. And every single workplace in our communities. I'm not making this up. Donald Trump admitted this yesterday. He bragged that during a shutdown, his administration could do things that are irreversible, reduce the federal workforce, slash programs, take away benefits.”
According to a White House memo, the shutdown could cost the U.S. economy 15 billion dollars in GDP each week, with as many as 43-thousand additional job losses if it stretches for a month.
The shutdown is likely to continue into next week, as Democrats are expected to block the Republican-backed funding bill again on Friday.
